Good contrasts made between the Lewis/Tolkien response to WWI vs. the canonical WWI poets. Lewis’ only gut-level response to WWI is perhaps found in Dymer, his early narrative poem, filled with horrifying scenes clearly taken directly from the trenches. Also, his sermon, “Learning in War Time” is a brilliant reflection on war I always share with my students.
